Live Blogging UFC 73 - Evans-Ortiz Fight
Well, it’s true that I am here to ruin The Namesake’s namesake (if that’s possible). I will attempt everything I can do to ruin Adam’s credibility. My first attempt is that I will be live blogging tonight’s UFC event, UFC 73. I am going to basically do a play-by-play for the Ortiz-Evans fight, but I will also let you know results and highlights of each match. This is something I plan on doing over here, hopefully for each UFC event. Hell, I might even get crazy and start live blogging bar fights. Well, here are three reasons why you should read my live blog instead of some other guys. (Ok, so maybe Sherdog has me beat. They are supposed to. Much respect to those guys and what they do.)
1. Who else live blogs the UFC? I am sure other people do, but I have also live blogged Arena Football before. Who has those credentials?
2. I might be having a few adult beverages during the fight and will be straight-foward with you. Unlike some of the big boys. Check out my Sierra Nevada Count.
3. Well, if you got to three then what else do you have better to do tonight? I mean you are already somewhat interested, so stick around, register, leave a comment and I will be here all night during the fights.
Well, the main focus behind me doing this tonight is that I believe that this is the new era of the UFC. They have the fans, have the fighters and now have combined Pride with the UFC. Boxing might just be dead in ten years. Tonight’s fights are some of the best match-ups the UFC has ever had, and it’s a ton more than Ortiz-Evans. Anderson Silva is one of my favorites, dude is like a spider. He has no easy task and some boys at Sherdog are even picking Marquardt. Then you have Sean Sherk fighting Hermes Franca. Sherk is a beast, but Franca is a very talented fighter. I am picking Franca to take home the title.
Is anyone else sick of Joe Rogan highlighting these fights? Don’t get me wrong, he knows his stuff. I have even heard he does at least train in MMA. I just want them to get someone else every once in awhile, but trust me I am not complaining anything is better than Larry Merchant (I am not sure if there is anyone in the world my girlfriend hates to hear talk more than Larry Merchant).
Boy they are almost over-hyping this card now. What happens if it doesn’t live up to the hype. Oh, that’s called boxing.
Folks we are almost live. I will still be highlighting and scoring each round in these fights but at least now I can give you a little more about my opinion on them. If you want to know about the fights not on the PPV look below.

Sierra Nevada Pale Count
Heath “The Texas Crazy Horse” Herring vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (LIVE)
My pick: Nogeira, he will make it three over Herring. My girlfriend is taking Heath Herring. I think she likes the cowboy in him.
(Nogeira came out to the Stones and looks ready to go)
RD 1: WOW! Herring stole that round with the last minute. He landed a shin to Nogeira’s face that I thought knocked him out. Herring failed at finishing him off, though. Herring wins that round 10-9. Herring is very bloody.
RD 2: Herring again lets his opportunity slip away by not doing anything for the first two minutes. He still wins the round, Herring 10-9.
RD 3: Herring is looking pathetic and tired. Nogeira tries a weak rear-naked choke, but Herring get out. He now has dominate position. He still looks tired though. 2 minutes left and they are on their feet. Nogeira lands a nasty punch to the chin. 1 minute left, they both exchange blows. I score the round for Nogeira 10-9. Scoring the fight 29-28 to Herring. I have a feeling the judges will feel different than me.
Decision: Nogeira wins the fight with a unanimous decision by all three judges 29-28. Herring didn’t finish the fight and he was rather ugly when he left the ring. Herring is an idiot and it makes sense that he has lost three times to Nogeira.
Overall Fight Score:

3 out of 5

SN Pale Ale Count
Hermes Franca vs. Sean Sherk (LIVE) Lightweight Championship
My pick: Franca, sorry “Shark” lovers he is going to lose his belt. Franca chooses “Crazy Train” as his walking music. Sherk comes out to his normal shark theme music. I just called Adam and told him to take a bet for Franca.
RD 1 -This one started off with a bang! Hermes caught Sean in a choke and almost had him sleeping. Now, Sherk is on top and giving a little G&P. Not much going on besides Sherk just being on top of Franca. Sherk looks like he might just overpower Franca like he did Kenny Florian. This is a tough round to call, I go with Sherk 10-9.
RD 2 -Franca comes out and lands a huge knee. Sherk is stunned and this could be the end of Sherk’s title reign. Sherk regains himself and gets top control. This fight could still go three more rounds — WOW. After the knee, Sherk seemed to gain control of the round. Franca again tries a choke in the final seconds of round 2. I scored the round for Franca 10-9.
RD 3 - Sherk gets a nice body slam. Then takes half-guard, he is just too strong for Franca. Sherk almost had an Americana. Sherk is too powerful and Franca looks beat, Sherk 10-9.
RD 4 -Franca starts off the round with a big knee. Sherk doesn’t seem faded and takes control. Sherk lands a NASTY, NASTY SLAM. Sherk takes round 10-9.
RD 5 - Franca will have to knockout or submit Sherk to win this fight. Franca’s nose might have gotten broken. Sherk lands a short-slam. 3 minutes left. Nothing much happene besides the fans started to boo. Sherk takes this fight.
Well, it looks like Adam will owe someone money. Like I said, I am here to ruin the Namesake.
(Editor’s Note: Thanks for losing me everything I won on the first fight! I thought you were a guru.)
Decision: Sherk wins, 50-45, 50-45, 49-46. Dominant!
Overall Fight Score:

4 out of 5 (started out as a classic, ended like a dud)

The Count
(My girlfriend just pointed out Joe Rogan’s chain wallet. I mean, come on dude. You are announcing a huge event (UFC proclaims) and you come out looking like you are still in 1994-95)
ORTIZ vs. EVANS
Evans comes out to a little Meth and Red. Tito comes out to his normal Eminem. Man, that song gets me pumped up. Adam better be ready to lose his bet to me. I am not losing another fight all night. I love that the official beer is Mickeys. I promise at the next event I will only drink Mickeys 40s!
My Pick: “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz
AND WE ARE GREEN BLAZZZZZZZZING!!!!
RD 1 - Lets get it on. Tito shoots and takes control of Rashad. Tito has Evans against the fence with Evans trying to land some body punches. They are now standing and trading punches. They are locked up against the fence. Big John takes a timeout to fix Evans mouthpiece. 2:30 left in round, nice leg kicks by Tito. Tito’s big fight experience seems to be helping him. Evans lands a few nice blows and cuts Ortiz’s right eye. It seems it was his thumbnail that cut him. Cut those things, man. Ortiz takes round 10-9.
RD 2 - 1st minute was rather dull. Big John is asking the fighters to fight. Tito is noticeably bothering Rashad. Tito is still bleeding out of his right eye. 2 minutes left in round, still not much going on. Both of these fighters are average strikers and it is showing in this fight. Tito almost taps out Evans, but time runs out. Tito is deducted a point for holding onto the fence. Tito was holding onto the cage, but won the round making it a 9-9 round.
RD 3 - Evans has to do something in this round. Rashad lands a nice hook, but not much going on in the 1st minute. Randy just said that Rashad might have over-trained. Tito has Rashad up against the cage with not much going on, 3 minutes left. Tito is basically just standing up tall and laying on him. Big John separates the fighters and makes them fight. Evans throwing haymakers to try and win this round. Tito tries to take him down and Evans makes a nice sprawl. 30 seconds left, Rashad has a nice takedown with seconds remaining in the fight. Evans wins the round 10-9 and this fight is a DRAW!
Decision: Unanimous Draw by all Judges. Tito holding onto the cage cost him the fight.
Overall Fight Score:

3 out of 5 (fight had more hype than substance)
Tito is already hyping the rematch. Is this what has come to his career? Rematches? This sets both careers back but neither loses much face.
DAMNIT, I don’t lose or win either! I would hate to be a fighter and get my face smashed in, and then have the fight mean nothing. Ouch! It’s time to up the Pale Ale Count.

It’s time to kick it in…
Marquardt comes out to “Eye of the Tiger” and Silva comes out to his own “Spider Theme Song.”
My Pick: Silva, I look for him to get nasty like he usually does and finish this one early.
RD 1 - Silva landed a big punch with a minute to go. Silva brings some big hands to follow and wins the match with just a few seconds left. Man, he is nasty. Silva retains the belt.
Overall Fight Score:

3 out of 5 (Silva shows again why he is one of the nastiest)

Daaaa Countttttt
Alvin Robinson vs. Kenny Florian (LIVE)
This is the last fight of the night. I am not sure why it is in this order. Sort of confusing me, actually the whole night has been.
My Pick: Florian, he will land a nasty elbow and get himself back on track.
RD 1 - Active first round so far. Robinson throwing some nice punches, but Florian is showing great technique. Florian takes mount and just starts raining shots. Wow! Robinson taps while getting punched, you don’t see that every fight. He was getting pounded, though, and Florian had to apologize to him after the ref called it.
Decision: Florian by TKO.
Overall Fight Score:

4 out of 5 (I always love Florian fights. They are exciting!)

They are going down rather fast now.
Well, that’s all. Thanks guys!
*************This was from early tonight****************
Mark Bocek vs. Frank Edgar (not on PPV)
Frank Edgar has won the fight due to strikes in the first round (4:55). From what I can tell this was just a one-sided match. He landed a right early and then it was goodnight for Mr. Bocek. Edgars wins by TKO.
Sierra Nevada Pale Count (if you haven’t had this beer I would suggest one, well, at least one)
Jason Gilliam vs. Chris Lytle (not on PPV)
Well, I expect this match to be heavily favored to Lytle. Last time we saw him in action he gave Matt Hughes all he wanted.
Sherdog.com is reporting that Lytle has won due to a triangle choke in the first round. Another fighter that dominated from the start until he made him tap. Hopefully, I will get to see one or two of these fights later in the night so I can tell you a little more about the fight.
Diego Saraiva vs. Jorge Gurgel (not PPV)
Some of you might already know Jorge from UFC’s reality show. He also helps man Rich Franklin’s corner. This should be an active fight.
Jorge wins the fight by unanimous decision, all three judges scored the bout 30-27. This is a good win for Jorge who has struggled a little bit in the UFC.

Sierra Nevada Pale Count
(I just got off the phone with my UFC insider. Here are his picks: Silva beats Marquardt, Franca will take Sherk’s belt, Florian will get a victory to get back on track, Nogueria should get his third win over Herring, and THE ONE YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR: He hated saying it but he believes Evans will beat Ortiz.)
Mike Nickels vs. Stephan Bonnar (not on PPV)
If Bonnar loses this one his days might be limited in UFV PPV.
Bonnar wins in the first, by rear-naked choke.
