Hump Day Hodgepodge: Party Pu-Pu Platter

  • Party Like Pacman

Congrats to the students and alumni of West Virgina University — the top party school in the nation! But, really, what else would you expect from the alma mater of Bob Huggins, Chris Henry and Pacman Jones? The survey was conducted by The Princeton Review, an educational services company. WVU ranked third last year.

Brigham Young University was named the “Stone Cold Sober” category winner for the tenth consecutive year. When you live in a state where polygamy is still the drill, partying isn’t really necessary. That’s the only sense I can make out of it.

Anyway, this kind of made me wonder which school has the craziest group of sports alumni?

I’m gonna have to roll with the University of Miami. Any school that produced The 7th Floor Crew, Greg Louganis, Michael Irvin, Ray Lewis and tons of other athletes gone wild is going to be hard to beat.

Some of my other favorites:

Of course West Virginia. The Henry-Huggins-Jones trio is classic.

The University of Southern Cal is another juggernaut — Frank Gifford, Mark McGwire, Matt Leinart, O.J. Simpson and Todd Marijuanavich.

The University of North Carolina is up there as well, with James Worthy, Lawrence Taylor and Marion Jones.

Boston College is no slouch either, boasting a roster of Bill Romanowski, Bruce Pearl, Mark Chmura, Sean Williams and William Green.

The duo of Jayson Williams and Ron Artest from St. John’s University is pretty damn unstoppable. If they only had some depth. Jamal Lewis and Woody Paige (University of Tennessee) and Tank Johnson and Warren Moon (University of Washington) are two other dynamite duos worth mentioning.

UNLV is a sleeper with J.R. Rider and his surrounding cast of Eric Wright and the Maloofs, not to mention Suge Knight in the stands.

Those are my favorites. And, no, Kyle Orton by himself isn’t enough to allow Purdue to knock of The U. Ditto with Citrus College and turtleneck wearin’ party god Larry Eustachy. Sorry to all the schools I didn’t include — one man can only do so much Wiki.

  • The Scoop on Superbad

This was a natural spot for me to deliver my promised rant about Superbad since we’re already discussing the topic of  partying.

Anyway, great movie. Not just good — great. To steal a Simmonsism, add this movie to the pantheon of great teenage/coming-of-age comedies. McLovin steals the show, even in somewhat limited screen time. His performance will ultimately be as memorable as Spicolli’s (Sean Penn) in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. He absolutely nailed it.

The two cops — Bill Hader of SNL and Seth Rogen of Knocked Up — were also unbelievable. Scene stealers almost every single time they appeared. Of course, the two main characters — Jonah Hill and Michael Cera — brought it as well.

What I liked about this movie was how it didn’t try too hard or take itself too seriously, yet also didn’t pull any punches. It also felt extremely authentic, you know, like the person who wrote it (Rogen) actually lived in this world at one point. Perfect script and acting, both maximized by the comedy direction of Greg Mottola. Everything really came together. If I had one complaint it would be that the two leads talk for way too long a couple of times, but most of their dialogue scenes are usually pretty damn funny, so this works more often than not. This is a movie that we’ll be watching for a long time, and one that will only keep getting better and better.

If you have a bad day — for instance, your cell phone breaks, your cat runs away and the chick you are talking to comes down with strep — go see this one. Then put on a skipper’s hat and head to the local dive bar to drink yourself silly. Not that I know anyone who did that, I just think that something like that might be good for low morale.
