Friday Flicks: Reggie Puts a Stop to the Sequel

Posted by: Zach

Today, I was set to do a piece on the highly anticipated Iron Man (2008) comic book flick, discussing the early buzz on the film and then transitioning into which NFL players I think would make the best iron men. That post will have to wait a while because…

Reggie Miller (CNN)My favorite athlete of all time, Reggie Miller, has decided to stay retired over making a comeback with the suddenly loaded Boston Celtics. At first I was saddened, especially when I read that he knew he could do it physically. Actually, I’m still a little upset now that I have to finally face the fact that his basketball career is said and done.

What does all of this have to do with Friday Flicks and the film industry?

Everything.

First off, Reggie went to UCLA, is a Los Angeles resident and a film producer.

More importantly, people today in both the film industry and the sports world just don’t know when to call it quits. The 14th Resident Evil sequel is about to drop, my friends. When is enough enough?

I guess, for most anyway, it’s all about money. Not for Reggie, though. Even though it’s tough — even tougher considering I have a rough headache/hangover, which I’m going to go ahead and blame on Brodie Croyle and my Chiefs — to handle him being permanently retired, I’m proud that he stuck by his decision, and I’m even prouder that he retired a Pacer.

In Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back the Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season joke works because the idea is ludicrous. Sometimes things are just meant to end — on a high note. The studios didn’t sign Bogie and Ingrid up for Casablanca 2: Rick Goes to America for a reason. Back then people believed in dignity, pride and storybook endings, things society seemingly threw in the dumpster long ago.

We didn’t need another Rush Hour 3, we don’t need a 59-year-old college linebacker and we don’t need another surefire NBA HOFer tarnishing their legacy in colors that just don’t look right.

There. I said it. Do with it what you will.

What to See This Weekend:

  • Superbad – If you don’t know — and how couldn’t you at this juncture — now you know. Man, those two cops — Bill Hader and Seth Rogen — are still killing me, and I watched this shit a week ago.
    • The Lookout (DVD) – Brick’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt rips it again in this sleeper hit. The kid is good. So is this thriller caper movie.
    • Breach (DVD) – Get over your homophobic Ryan Phillippe complex, throw in this disc and watch my fellow Missourian Chris Cooper steal the show. You gotta love that guy.

What to Avoid Like the Dogfights:

    • Rush Hour 3 – If this post hit home or you read reviews, then you won’t go see this piece of garbage.
    • The Invasion – Nicole Kidman teams up with Daniel Craig and out comes a flop? Yes, apparently so.
    • Mr. Bean’s Holiday – Anyone who goes to this is out of “my five”, fired from my MySpace and… just go kill yourself.
              BallHype: hype it up!
