Amalia Tabata Pereira, the wife of Pirates prospect Jose Tabata, is being held by police as a suspect in the brief kidnapping of a 2-month-old baby in Tampa. Accounts of the kidnapping read like something from a really awful TV movie: According to authorities, Pereira posed as an immigration worker to fool the baby’s Mexican parents into thinking they were going to be deported, then had them hand over the child to her. Just one day later, however, Pereira was arrested by police after they received an anonymous tip, and the child has now been returned safe-and-sound to the mother.
The 43-year-old Pereira is evidently not new to the criminal game: authorities say her priors include fraud and theft convictions, and when they tried looking further into her background, they discovered a long list of aliases. Apparently her 20-year-old husband Jose knew nothing of his wife’s secret life as a babysnatching thief, which further reinforces my conviction that marriage is a silly idea that can only bring despair. Jose’s lucky he found out about this before making it big in the majors, cause clearly, this woman was only interested in sponging off him.
