Moats Cop Also Once Handcuffed and Jailed Zach Thomas’s Wife…Over a U-Turn
Robert Powell, the cop who incurred the nation’s wrath after detaining Texans RB Ryan Moats while his mother-in-law was dying in the hospital, reportedly has a history of mistreating NFL players and their family members. According to the Dallas Morning News, Mr. Powell, who is on administrative leave in the wake of the Moats debacle, also once pulled over Zach Thomas’s wife Maritza for an illegal U-turn…and somehow ended up cuffing her, driving her off in his cruiser and throwing her in the tank for three hours.
“This in no way compares to what happened to Ryan Moats and his family,” Zach Thomas said in a statement. “But we wanted to tell our story, not knowing how many others have been affected by Officer Powell. We know the vast majority of the Dallas police force are good and professional people, but this guy just seems excessive.”
Zach was being diplomatic by calling Powell “excessive.” Let me use the language I’m sure Zach wanted to use:
“Mr. Powell – who does not deserve the respect implied by the honorific “Mr.” – is an ignorant redneck piece of [expletive] who abuses his power as a police officer to get his cowardly jollies. Not only should Mr. Powell be stripped of his badge, he should be taken out to some undisclosed desert locale where men in black hoods attach one end of a rope to his genitals and the other to the back bumper of a 4×4, then drive the 4×4 100 mph across the rockiest, most cactus-ridden terrain they can find, dragging Mr. Powell across said terrain by said genitals. This plan of course depends on Powell actually possessing genitals. Given the punk-ass way he’s behaved, it’s possible he lost them at some point, or never had them, or simply feels insecure about the size of them. That would explain a lot about why he insists on treating people the way he does.”
Or words to that effect.

I think that maybe there is something that we have all overlooked. When Police Officers pull People over, maybe they have had people lie to them in the past, saying ” I am on the way to the hospital, etc.” and they have found out that these people have lied to them, and they are a little hard-pressed to have people let go, . . . uh, OK, uh, I’ll let you go, no ticket . . .uh, OK, bye!

Drunk with Power.
I struggled with doing an editorial piece on this story. On one hand, this guy is a jerk and there are others like him. On the other, there are good cops too. Sports radio was flooded with *good* stories from callers about officers helping them rush a pregnant wife to the hospital and stories like that.
I guess if you’ve had bad experiences with officers in your town, vote down the millages; cut the funding. What else can you do aside from staying out of trouble?
