Yes kids, it’s that time of the year again: time for the Yankees and Red Sox to renew their ages-old, ever-more-tedious and over-hyped rivalry. Expect wall-to-wall coverage on ESPN, including at least one on-air Peter Gammons orgasm. Among the things you shouldn’t expect: a lot of brotherly affection flying from David Ortiz toward Joba Chamberlain. Big Papi – who has been neither big nor papi so far this season – has made it quite clear that he doesn’t like Joba’s bean-ball antics. He wants Joba to know that if Joba tries throwing at Kevin Youkilis, a guy he’s buzzed several times in the past, or any other Red Sox player…well, that’s not going to sit very well with him:
None of that, man — just play the game the way it’s supposed to be, and that’s about it.
This is a guy, as good as he is, the next step for him will be to earn respect from everybody in the league. He’s not a bad guy, but when things like that happen, people get the wrong idea.
Papi has seen into Joba’s secret heart and knows that Joba is actually a nice guy who sometimes goes funny in the head and tries to brain hitters with his fastball. I don’t agree though. I think Joba is just a jerk. And I think Papi is lucky he has a great track-record to fall back on, cause otherwise he would be just another .200 hitter talking silly smack when he should be in the cage trying to get his swing together.
