Rain Goes Away; David Duval Begins His Annual Tease
The rain finally let up on Long Island, allowing the puny mortal golfers to resume the U.S. Open. So far the big buzz has been for Phil Mickelson, who is this year’s inspirational story, by virtue of his wife having breast cancer. Everyone wants Phil to win – because his wife is sick. People would be really disappointed if Phil lost – cause it might make his wife, who has breast cancer, feel even worse.
The TV announcers, especially that pinhead Mike Tirico, have not been shy about bringing up how inspirational Phil is. I personally haven’t felt this inspired since that dude picked up Kerri Strug. Isn’t sports great, especially when it involves physical injuries and/or ill spouses?
Another inspirational story began brewing on Day 2 when famed wash-out David Duval got himself under par. It was just like last year when Greg Norman played well at the British Open…except that Duval is an even more pitiful case than Norman. Of course, it is nothing new for Duval to peek his head up at a major tournament for a few minutes, just to remind us how great he was before he completely forgot how to play. Seems like, every year, Duval makes a mini-run somewhere, only to fade once again into nothingness. Watching Duval hit it well is a little like seeing a ghost. Is that really David Duval or just a figment of my imagination? Did anyone else feel that cold draft?
Meanwhile, Tiger Woods – the guy everyone cares about – is pretty much stinking it up, having posted a 4-over 74 in the first round (which, again, had to be completed on the second day because of all that falling moisture). NBC and ESPN want everyone to know that this doesn’t mean Tiger’s out of it. It’s Tiger Woods – he can always make a run. Even when he can’t.

June 20th, 2009 at 3:17 amI think Duval is starting to peak. I would expect him to have a decent showing over the final two rounds. He is currently posted at -3 after two rounds. Pretty good. If it does not happen this weekend he will put four straight good rounds together and have a chance to win again. As a native of Duval county I have a special affinity for David. Lets hope that ghost you saw is the new David, getting back to the old David.
