Maria Sharapova may be a big deal in the world of fashion, and going to movie premieres to get one’s picture taken with random Jonas Brothers, but in tennis? She matters about as much as the Washington Nationals do to baseball.
Okay, I know: Maria’s a big star. Why else would she be playing (and losing, to some broad I never heard of) on Center Court of Wimbledon in the second round? I guess there are just lots of leering British pigs who have nothing better to do than pack a tennis stadium hoping to catch a glimpse of a “Russian” fashion model’s white undies.
Wimbledons past have taught us that star power isn’t necessarily a reflection of on-court performance. Who was ever a bigger deal in the British tabs than Anna Kournikova? And what did she ever do at Wimbledon besides irritate everyone by hogging all the attention?
Maria of course has won Wimbledon once, and will therefore never be as big a fraud as Kournikova. But, unless she gets past her physical issues and starts making some late runs in these big tournaments, she will continue sliding into the tennis abyss, a place so dark and smelly even Mike Rowe wouldn’t venture there.
